Assam is grappling with severe flooding and landslides following relentless monsoon rains, which have claimed at least eight lives and disrupted the lives of over 78,000 residents across more than 15 districts.
Rivers Breach Danger Levels
Ten major rivers, including the
Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above their danger marks, prompting the
Central Water Commission (CWC) to issue an "orange alert" for the
state. The Brahmaputra has surpassed danger levels in Dibrugarh and Nematighat
(Jorhat), while other rivers like the Dhaleswari, Rukni, and Katakhal have also
overflowed, exacerbating the flood situation.
Widespread Impact Across Districts
The floods have submerged 175
villages across 12 districts, with Lakhimpur being the worst affected,
accounting for over 41,600 impacted residents. In total, more than 78,000
people have been affected across 15 districts, including Cachar, Sribhumi, and
Nagaon. In response, authorities have established 52 relief camps housing over
10,000 individuals and set up 103 relief distribution centers.
Emergency Measures and Alerts
The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) has issued red and yellow alerts for several districts, including
Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Dima Hasao, and Cachar, warning of heavy to extremely
heavy rainfall in the coming days. Emergency services, including the National
Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local
authorities, are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations
Disruptions to Daily Life
The severe weather has disrupted
road and rail transport across the state, with several routes rendered
impassable due to flooding and landslides. In Guwahati, power outages have been
reported, and schools and colleges have been closed as a precautionary measure.
Government Response and Assistance
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has
assured full support from the central government, offering assistance to the
flood-affected regions. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA)
continues to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with various agencies
to provide timely relief and support to those in need.
Residents in vulnerable areas,
especially those near rivers and low-lying regions, are advised to remain vigilant
and follow official advisories. With the monsoon season ongoing, authorities
emphasize the importance of preparedness and caution to mitigate further risks.
