IAS Officer Slaps Student Repeatedly During Exam in Madhya Pradesh, Video Sparks Outrage
Bhind, Madhya Pradesh | April 1, 2025
A video capturing an IAS officer physically assaulting a student during an exam has gone viral, triggering widespread outrage across the country. The incident took place at Deendayal Dangraulia Mahavidyalaya in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, where District Magistrate Sanjeev Srivastava was seen slapping a student multiple times inside an exam hall.
The student, identified as Rohit Rathore, was appearing for his BSc second-year Mathematics paper under Jiwaji University. The video shows Srivastava entering the classroom, dragging the student out of his seat, and slapping him repeatedly in front of teachers and students. The assault reportedly continued even after Rathore was taken into a staff room.
Student’s Statement
Speaking to local media, Rathore said he was left shocked and helpless. “He kept slapping me without asking anything. I didn’t even get a chance to explain. My ear is still hurting,” he said, claiming the slaps left him disoriented and in pain.
District Magistrate’s Justification
Srivastava defended his actions, stating he was acting against a “cheating racket” and that the exam center had been flagged for serious irregularities. “There were reports of solved answer sheets being smuggled into the center. I took action to uphold the sanctity of the examination process,” he said.
He also recommended that the university discontinue the use of the college as an exam center in future sessions.
Public and Political Reaction
The video has sparked widespread condemnation on social media and from civil rights groups. Critics have called Srivastava’s behavior a gross abuse of power and a violation of student rights.
Political leaders across party lines have demanded immediate suspension and a high-level inquiry into the incident. Adding to the controversy, it has come to light that the college is owned by the father-in-law of Congress MLA Hemant Katare, raising questions about political interference and bias.
Previous Allegations
This is not the first time IAS officer Sanjeev Srivastava has been in the spotlight. A Gwalior High Court bench recently criticized his administrative conduct, and a local tehsildar has accused him of mental harassment.
No Official Action Yet
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Madhya Pradesh government regarding disciplinary action. However, mounting public pressure is expected to force an administrative review.
